Chat & Review | Here With You by Umm Afraz Muhammed

Book Review: Genre: Islamic Fiction

One of the most common and universal issues in the majority of the households has been the mother-in-law, daughter-in-law issue.

We have witnessed the ego’s flaring, personalizing every spoken word, the endless blame games and a plethora of emotions popping up.

It is also one of the most stereotyped relationships and mostly one gets into it with prejudice and preconceived ideas, expecting it to be disastrous in every way possible, kind of making it a self-fulfilling prophecy, taking away the possibility of cultivating it into a beautiful cordial relationship, without even giving it a chance or nurturing that it requires.

Author Umm Afraz Muhammed provides a fresh perspective to this stereotype in her debut book ‘Here With You’, doing full and total justice to each character, as she highlights individual perspectives through the eyes of each character, of the issues that crop up throughout the storyline.

The entire South Indian Muslim Family Dynamics is captured effectively, without a dull moment to spare.

Be it Salma’s effort as a new bride to fit into her household and being a supportive wife, or Fathima’s insecurities as a new mother-in-law and the revelations and realisations that she goes through as a mother, mother-in-law, and wife, or Faisal’s balancing act being a loving husband and a devoted son, along with his own personal struggles, it’s beautifully weaved, amidst some much needed Islamic reminders making it a pleasant read on quiet afternoon when you were to seek recluse in a book.
